Hailed by many as one of Brian Wilson’s best, and most inspiring, works, Pet Sounds is a reissue of one of my favorite classics. It is consistently upbeat and delightful in all its fresh, youthful simplicity. As is clearly evidenced by the cover photo, this is, undoubtedly, a primordial album, yet it is an integral part of the backbone of rock as we know it today.
The vocals are gorgeous, the rhythm section is outstanding and the musicianship is extraordinary.
It opens up with the catchy “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.” The lyrics make me smile when I think back upon the days when I too thought, “Wouldn’t it be nice if we were older….” (Especially now that I’m thinking “Wouldn’t it be nice if we could hit pause.”) My absolute favorite track here has to be “Sloop John B,” with its gorgeous vocal harmonies and uplifting, yet somehow tranquil, energy. “God Only Knows” offers more of the same sweetness with its melodic flow of synergistic sound. “I Know There’s An Answer” and “Hang On To Your Ego” are very close cousins, both are extremely danceable with some gorgeous horns. There is one track here entitled “Unreleased Backgrounds” that makes you feel like you’re part of the family.
If you’re in the mood for some vintage rock and roll, this is the perfect album to take the chill out of a rainy fall evening.
