This is good ol’ down home country gospel and has a nice blend of old classics with some newer fare. The vocals are splendid with sweet harmonies. The musicianship is tight and there are a number of upbeat, danceable tracks laced throughout. Three previously unreleased tracks are included.
It opens with “Here Was a Man” a very compelling, very old-school rap about Jesus. “He’ll Understand and Say Well Done” is cheerful and upbeat with lovely backup vocals. “Belshazzar” is another energetic track with some beautiful guitar work. Cash’s rendition of “Swing Low Sweet Chariot” is stellar and had me singing right along, much to the dismay of my upstairs neighbor, Agnes. Despite the title, “Troublesome Waters” is a finger-snappin,’ toe tappin’ ditty with delightful lyrics. “My Ship Will Sail” has some strong bass work by Howard “Duke” Goff. “Far Side Banks of Jordan” is a gorgeous duet featuring June Carter Cash. Johnny Cash’s version of “Amazing Grace” is spectacular. My favorite track here has to be “Daddy Sang Bass.” There is a wonderful blend of textures of sound on this one that makes it impossible not to love.
If you like gospel, this is a timeless classic that you definitely don’t want to miss.
