It’s hard to go wrong with Elvis Costello and this disc is no exception. It’s jam-packed with energetic and well-loved classics.
It kicks off with the danceable “(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes.” Things slow down a bit with the bittersweet ballad “Alison.” “Watching the Detectives” is dark and gritty with a powerful bass line. “(I Don’t Want To Go To) Chelsea” has a gorgeous beat and magnificent guitar stylings. “Pump It Up” is another danceable tune with a nice strong rhythm section. One of my favorites here is “Radio, Radio.” Aside from being catchy with an addictive melody, it imparts a benevolent political message. “Accidents Will Happen” will draw you in with some of the most insightful lyrics ever written. “Oliver’s Army” is enchanting with an energetic beat and wonderful vocal harmonies. Costello’s vocal range is astonishing and it is highlighted beautifully in “Beyond Belief.” “Man Out of Time” is breezy and soothing. “Everyday I Write The Book” is a toe-tappin’, finger-snappin’ track with delightfully clever lyrics. “Shipbuilding” is sweet and melancholy.
This disc wouldn’t necessarily be the best choice for serious Elvis fans, simply because most would already have what’s on here. But it’s a fine album for the casual dabbler and perfect fare for your next summer barbeque or road trip.
