When I first popped the soundtrack for the latest Farrelly Brothers movie, .com/articles/07/NW0700565.php>The Heartbreak Kid, into my CD player, I was expecting something very…Farrelly Brothers. Something outrageous and over-the-top and goofy—to go with the Brothers’ typically over-the-top movies. So I was surprised to find that The Heartbreak Kid soundtrack is surprisingly mellow.
Opening with The Flaming Lips’ quirky “The Tale of the Horny Frog,” this soundtrack may be unexpectedly light for an outrageous Farrelly Brothers comedy starring Ben Stiller, but, at the same time, it’s appropriately laid-back for a movie that takes place mostly at a tropical resort. So I’ll cut it some slack.
From Buva’s “She Makes Me Fall Down” to “Painting By Chagall” by The Weepies, The Heartbreak Kid soundtrack has a certain stripped-down, chilling-out-on-the-beach, sing-along-around-the-campfire feel to it. And Julieta Venegas’s “Canciones De Amor”—a song that reminds me of an old woman we met on our honeymoon, who was desperately in search of some “happy Mexican music”—adds an appropriately south of the border feel (as do parts of the Flaming Lips’ tracks).
I’ve had a love-hate relationship with both the Farrelly Brothers’ new movie and its soundtrack. I loved the movie for a while—until it just fell apart in the end. Strangely, though, the soundtrack had exactly the opposite effect on me. I didn’t like it the first couple of times I listened to it. It seemed too mellow—and it just felt a little too cute. But, slowly but surely, after a few listens, the album grew on me. It definitely has more of a ‘70s easy-listening feel to it than I expected—even despite the inclusion of a couple of David Bowie tracks—and it definitely isn’t a must-own collection. But it’s just the thing to help you relax after a long day of work. And if you happen to be heading south of the border for a relaxing resort vacation, it works then, too. (Just take my advice: if you happen to run into Ben Stiller while you’re there, run away.)
