When my brother asked me if I wanted to borrow the first season of Heroes on DVD, I said, “Sure. Why not?” I wasn’t expecting much—but I should have known that my brother wouldn’t recommend a dud. Heroes is a multifaceted, mind-blowing series from start to finish.
The whole season is set within a five-week period. Hiro Nakamura (Masi Oka) figures out how to teleport from one place to another and ends up in New York City—only it’s five weeks later than the day he teleported. The last thing he sees before he teleports back to Japan is a nuclear explosion that will destroy New York. Determined to be a hero, in spite of his seemingly lack of control where teleportation is concerned, he sets out to save New York.
A high school cheerleader, Claire Bennet (Hayden Panettiere), tries to understand why she can’t die—even after jumping from high places and being hit head-on by a car. At the same time, a young artist, Isaac Mendez (Santiago Cabrera), paints the future that includes the cheerleader. She must not die, or New York will be doomed.
Meanwhile, as different people across the globe are trying to come to terms with their special abilities, a serial killer named Sylar (Zachary Quinto) is stalking them and stealing their abilities by murdering them and absorbing their special abilities into himself for his own selfish purposes. Each person will play a key roll in saving New York, for they must all come together and work as one. That’s hard to do when half of them don’t understand or are afraid of their abilities—or they just want to pretend they don’t have them. I really can’t tell you much more than that, because the plot is so intricate and startling, I’d run the risk of giving away key plot points. Trust me, you don’t want me to spoil anything when it comes to this TV series.
I was totally blown away by the first season of Heroes. It has so many holy-cow-I-didn’t-see-that-coming moments, it’s unbelievable. The twists and turns and shocking events keep you enthralled throughout the entire season. I wouldn’t have been able to stand waiting a week between episodes, so thank goodness for DVD! I watched the first season in one weekend. The complex plot—and how it all comes together in the end—will amaze you.
Now I’m eager to see if they can keep up the same level of blow-your-mind story lines in the second season—because the first season of Heroes is definitely going to be hard to top.
