When I first ran across up-and-coming musician Kate Voegele on MySpace, I wasn’t really expecting much—but then I listened to her sample songs, and I quickly changed my mind. I don’t like a whole lot of today’s rock music; it’s too loud, too obnoxious, or just plain awful. But Kate Voegele is none of those. Her voice is strong with a smidgen of something unique that makes her stand her apart from everyone else.
I can listen to Ms. Voegele’s album, Don’t Look Away, at work without bothering anyone—and I’ve also found that I can still concentrate while Kate sings in the background. Her sound is soothing, yet upbeat, and her energetic songs put you in a positive mood, which is why I love to listen to her. Her songs give me the desire to get up and move forward.
This CD will probably appeal the most to girls in their teens or their early twenties—as well as a few older folks, like me, who listen to a variety of music. Ms. Voegele is young and cute, and you’ll enjoy listening to her sing. You can’t help but get caught up in her enthusiasm for what she does, and that’s another thing that makes her stand out from the same old musical crowd.
Though I like all of the songs on Don’t Look Away, a few stand out as my favorites—including “Chicago,” “Only Fooling Myself,” and “It’s Only Life.” Those three songs speak of life and love—and how to keep moving forward, even when you don’t want to. Ms. Voegele sends the message that life is to be lived, no matter how much it hurts, and not to shy away from it—a realistic, but positive message. But I guess I’d have to say that “No Good” is my favorite song on the CD. It’s a song about going back to a bad relationship because you can’t help yourself—and it has a great sound. It’s a fast-paced song, and I love singing along.
The next time you’re looking for a rock sound that’s not too harsh and nor too soft—but falls somewhere in the middle—Kate Voegele is the gal to listen to. Give her a try; I promise you won’t be disappointed.
