Cyrese Covelli writes supernatural young adult novels, which are some of the best e-books I’ve read in this genre in a long while. She brings freshness to the vampire, witch, and shape-shifter genres, along with young adults who tackle life with humor and wit.
Cyrese Covelli was born in Park Ridge, Illinois, where, after her grandmother made her go outside and play, she’d make excuses to come back inside. If she tried to use the “I’m thirsty” routine, she’d be directed to the nearest garden hose. So she spent her time reading on a blanket under the crabapple tree in the backyard.
She loves to make things that if you were to buy them instead, would cost a fortune. For her wedding this February, she has a Gothic Winter Fairy Tale theme. The flower girls are carrying black baskets full of red apples with petals sprinkled in for the aisle and white flower halos with cascading black and red ribbons. For three girls, she spent about $17 for everything.
Passionate about animals, she’s been known to pull over when she sees a stray running through the snow in the winter. She thinks she will take them to a no-kill shelter where they will be warm; they think, who is this crazy lady, and why is she chasing me and tossing kibble at me?
Some of her favorite things include loafing, watching stand-up comedy, and spooning with her cats and her fiancé.
On writing in Ms. Covelli’s own words
What or who inspires you to write?
My fiancé Ryan Sherwood. He is always nagging me to get back to the computer when I want to unwind by staring zombie-like at reality TV. I also love when readers email me. It is very bizarre to me because I was such a ridiculous fan-girl of L.J. Smith and Anne Rice when I was growing up. I met the latter at a book signing and blinked stupidly at her for the duration.
Why did you begin writing?
I have always written, even before I could read. That’s what my family tells me. Grabbing the nearest book, I would make up stories to go with the pictures. There’s a hilarious video of the three granddaughters playing on the piano. My sister Jolena says, “Hi I’m Jolena. I’m six years old.” My cousin follows up with the same and when it’s my turn, I sit down, look straight into the camera and say, “There was thunder and storms in the sky…”
What author inspires you?
Stephen King. Truly, he is one of the most brilliant writers of the 20th century. He’s known as the King of Terror, and for the dark worlds in which his novels take place, but no one focuses enough on the level of pure talent etched in every word of his stories. Never have I read an author with more insight into the minds of others.
What do you find most rewarding about writing?
I love creating stories and characters that I could’ve fallen for as a teen. The few aspects I wanted for
the bad boys I read, I can put into a new character.
Have you experienced writer’s block? And if so, how did you cure it?
I don’t think it exists. That’s not to say that I am a prolific machine. I am on a writing hiatus nearing 9 months, but it isn’t because the story isn’t there percolating in my head. It’s because I’m not as hungry for it as I have been in the past. I think there are just times you are more willing to wrestle with your characters and rip through the monotonous parts until you get to the tasty scenes.
When is your next book due out, and what’s it about?
My next book, Bloodcharm (Witchlock Book 4) will be released in the winter of 2010. Stay tuned for more information soon.
