When I was a kid, I dreaded the sight of Mom’s old slow cooker—because there were only a few things that my mom made in her slow cooker, and they were generally brown and mushy. Now, however, I love my slow cooker. I love being able to throw some ingredients together during my lunch break and have them waiting for me when I finish work for the day. And thanks to books like Phyllis Pellman Good’s Fix-It and Forget-It Cookbook, I’ve got an arsenal of great slow cooker recipes—very few of which (if any) involve brown, mushy food.
The latest Fix-It and Forget-It collection includes a whopping 700 slow cooker recipes. Throughout its pages, you’ll find everything from the old slow cooker standbys—the dips and soups and roasts—to the unexpected additions, from corn bread to caramel apple cider. There are appetizers and veggies, breakfast dishes and desserts. There are recipes here for every occasion and every taste—even picky eaters like I was when I was a kid. And as you flip through the book, you’ll find page after page of recipes that you’ll be dying to try.
There are so many recipes, in fact, that the collection is a bit overwhelming. Each page can feature up to four recipes—as well as a helpful slow cooker tip—so there’s quite a lot here to digest. The book also moves from section to section without much warning (especially when you’re looking for a specific type of dish within the Main Dish category). There aren’t any tabs or dividers to keep sections separate, either—so you might want to come up with your own system—maybe using Post-It notes for easy access to your favorite sections. When you first flip through the book, you might want to have a highlighter handy, so when you’re searching for ideas later, you’ll be able to quickly spot your favorite recipes—or those you want to try.
The Fix-It and Forget-It Cookbook is like a giant church cookbook. It’s loaded with favorite old recipes that have been contributed by cooks from around the country—recipes that will soon become your favorites, too. It’s the kind of book that you’ll reach for time and time again. You’ll write in the margins, you’ll get sauce splattered on the pages, and you’ll copy the recipes to share with your friends. If you love using your slow cooker as much as I do, you’ll want to keep a copy of the Fix-It and Forget-It Cookbook handy.
