When I first picked up Angels, Vampires & Douche Bags, I had planned to read only one or two chapters before moving on to some fiction. That’s the way I read non-fiction: repeating the routine each night until the book is finished. But although I didn’t agree with all of her assessments, I became so absorbed in this book that I continued to read until the wee hours of the night.
Author Carla Collins describes three types of people who may come into your life. Angels are the friends you can count on, as well as the people who may flit into your life and either leave you with a good experience or help you in a positive way. Vampires are the bad boys you crave and the takers who never give—who can sometimes suck you dry before they leave you in a mess. Then there are the douche bags—those people who disgust and annoy you.
Throughout this motivational read, Ms. Collins gives you three coins of advice: you’ll want to keep angels around you as much as possible; you’ll want to keep vampires to a minimum; and you’ll want to avoid douche bags at all costs (while avoiding being a douche bag yourself). All of this is interspersed with humorous experiences taken from the author’s life.
In Angels, Vampires & Douche Bags, Ms. Collins brings readers a frank, honest, and occasionally funny confessional about the types of people she’s encountered in her life. I didn’t always agree with her political or social views, but she keeps those to a bare minimum, which keeps the book from turning into a bitter diatribe about conservative people, such as myself. And although the stories aren’t all as funny as I’d hoped they would be, a few times, I did actually laugh so hard and loud that it started the dogs barking outside (no doubt causing the neighbors to think that I’m a douche bag).
An uplifting, inspirational read about the people who make you smile, who annoy you, or who just plain hurt you, Angels, Vampires & Douche Bags kept me up until I finished the entire book. Need something to pull you out of a “case of the Mondays”? This is just the book to do it. I guarantee that it’ll at least put a smile on your face and make you feel a little more elevated for the rest of the day.
