BANGOR, ME Lawrence Jamison has always been the life of the party. In fact, residents of Bangor invite him to their parties for the sole purpose of letting him amuse and entertain their guests. Sometimes he even brings his own props—joy buzzers, squirting flowers, you name it.
Everyone loves Jamison. Said the jokester in a touching June, 1997 interview with the Bangor Chronicle, “I’ve been making people laugh since back in junior high. I was always kind of a loser, so I just took advantage of the fact that people were already laughing at me, and I used it for my own benefit.”
But never before has one of Jamison’s moments of comic relief backfired on him as badly as it did last weekend.
Jamison was attending Roger and Muriel Frampton’s 30th wedding anniversary party on Saturday afternoon. A crowd had gathered around him as he stood by the snack table. Jamison had the crowd rolling with laughter as he used snack food as props. He lined carrot and celery sticks in his mouth and, to top it all off, he stuck pretzel rods up his nose—one in each nostril. He then chuckled along with the crowd as he chased delighted party-goers around the room. He sang songs. He danced. He played silly party games. He did the Funky Chicken.
And then, when it was time for a moving speech by the Framptons’ oldest son, Harold, Jamison discovered that he couldn’t remove the pretzel rod from his left nostril. It had become lodged. After several unsuccessful attempts to remove it, he began to panic. As guests realized what had happened, they, too, began to panic. Shrieks came from throughout the crowd. (So did the stifled snickers of those who, deep down, found the tragedy more amusing than the man’s antics.)
In the insanity, one of the guests had the presence of mind to call for an ambulance, which arrived and took Jamison to the emergency room, where he underwent an extensive surgical procedure. He was held over night and released on Sunday afternoon.
Said Jamison in response to the incident, “I guess from now on, I’ll make sure to carefully examine the diameter of anything I attempt to embed in my nose. Perhaps I’ll just have to stick with baby carrots next time.”
Jamison plans to be back to full health in time to have them rolling in the aisles at little Joey Klein’s second birthday party next weekend.
Kristin Dreyer Kramer has been writing in some form or another (usually when she was supposed to be doing something else) since the ripe old age of ten—when she, her cousin, and their two Cabbage Patch Dolls formed the Poo Authors’ Club. After a short career in advertising, Kristin got sick of always saying nice things about stuff that didn’t deserve it—so now she spends her days criticizing things, and she’s much happier for it.
Since creating NightsAndWeekends.com in February of 2002, Kristin has spent her life surrounded by piles and piles of books and movies—so many that her office has become a kind of entertainment obstacle course.
As if her writing and editing responsibilities for N&W.com weren’t enough to keep her out of trouble, Kristin also hosts a number of weekly radio shows: Reel Discovery, Shelf Discovery, and On the Marquee. She’s also a proud member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (CriticsChoice.com), the Central Ohio Film Critics Association (COFCA.org), the Online Film Critics Society (OFCS.org), and the Women Film Critics Circle (WFCC.Wordpress.com).
