When Gideon Hawks stumbles across a young woman in an alley, he thinks she’s dead, and he tries to revive her. Once he’s certain that she’s breathing, he takes her back to his place. She seems lost and alone, and his heart goes out to her. Soon he finds himself falling in love with her, but there’s someone else who wants her all to himself, and he’ll kill anyone who gets in his path.
Gideon’s Heart is the third book in the Bound by Blood, The Legends series—following Kensington’s Soul and Dunbar’s Curse—and it’s probably the best of the three. Although Gideon is still a bit too sweet for my taste, I liked his character much better than previous heroes in the series. Though his jealous inclinations don’t help his character much, I pegged him as an okay guy—just not the type of guy I’d be attracted to.
Katheryne, on the other hand, makes the perfect vulnerable heroine (without going into wimp mode). I actually liked her lovable, caring personality—and it helps that her claws and fangs come out when something threatens Gideon, keeping her sweet nature from coming across as weak.
Since the author chose to focus on the romance between Gideon and Katheryne, there isn’t a whole lot of suspense to even out the slow-moving plot. All in all, though, Gideon’s Heart is a pretty good read. It isn’t the best vampire romance I’ve ever read, but it’s still pleasant enough to enjoy.
If you take pleasure in well-written, sweet vampire romances, then Gideon’s Heart will be right up your alley. But if you’re looking for something with a little more kick, try American Vampire by Jennifer Armintrout instead.
