When life turns sour, I like to immerse myself in a world where the men are honorable and the women are strong—where everything turns out well in the end. Cassandra Clare’s third book in The Immortal Instruments Series, City of Glass, gave me hours of blissful escape from reality.
Desperate to save her mother, Clary travels to the City of Glass—the ancestral home of the Shadowhunters—even though it’s illegal for her to be there. And, worse, Jace doesn’t want her there, either. It’s not safe. Valentine is summoning an army of demons to destroy those Shadowhunters that choose not to stand with him. His quest to rid the world of demons has twisted his mind to the point of darkness, and no one can make him see the light.
Simon, Clary’s best friend and a Daywalker (a vampire who can walk in sunlight), also accidentally gets pulled into the City of Glass. He becomes a prisoner of the Clave (Shadowhunter Council) who do not trust what he is—and what he could do with his powers.
As the council argues about the best way to defeat Valentine, Clary finds an ally in an enigmatic boy named Sebastian. Together, they prepare to stand with the Shadowhunters to battle Valentine’s army of demons—but enemies lurk in the most unlikely of places.
City of Glass is marvelously suspenseful and amorously tragic, filled with characters you’ll fall in love with as you pray that they all come through the battle in one piece. Ms. Clare blends the right amount of suspense with strong, three-dimensional characters to drive the story toward a harrowing climax that will leave you wild-eyed and crazy with trepidation.
Clary is the perfect heroine—not too harsh, not too soft. No matter how scared she is, she would swim through a lake of demons to save her family and friends. Jace, meanwhile, is the perfect tortured hero—except not in the sickening I-hate-myself kind of way. He’s sarcastically funny and a delight to spend time with.
A host of secondary characters—all of whom shine with their own unique light and personality—round out this gripping paranormal young adult tale of love and adventure that’s fraught with peril from all sides. A thrilling page-turner, City of Glass will keep you lost in a fictional world that you’ll never want to leave. Come—join me. We’ll have a blast!
