The holiday season is a frantic time—even more so, it seems, if you have kids. But somewhere between the time you spend decking the halls and surfing the Internet for the perfect gifts for everyone on your list, you’ll want to take some time out to sit back and enjoy the holiday season with your little ones. And if you pick up the BabyLit edition of A Christmas Carol, you’ll be able to teach them about colors while enjoying a Christmas classic.
This clever little board book sums up Charles Dickens’s beloved holiday tale in just 10 images—with 10 coordinating colors. It starts with Scrooge’s black hat (“Bah, humbug!”), moving on to Marley’s silver chains and the Ghost of Christmas Present’s green wreath before coming to a close with Tiny Tim’s red scarf (“God bless us, every one!”). The colors are depicted in Alison Oliver’s simple but vibrant illustrations, which capture the essence of the story while bringing the key characters to life (even the dead ones!). And even the youngest readers will love studying these bold images while paging through the book.
Of course, BabyLit’s version of A Christmas Carol doesn’t include the full text of the Dickens novel—just a few iconic images. So if you’re looking for a short, simple version of the story to read to your kids, this isn’t the book for you. Literary-minded moms and dads, however, are sure to appreciate the book’s creativity—and they may just find themselves filling in the details, telling the classic story in their own words as they point out the colors and the pictures to their kids.
Again, as with the BabyLit version of Dracula, kids probably won’t learn a lot about classic literature just by flipping through these colorful pages. For that, they’ll need a little help from Mom and Dad (or maybe a bookworm-ish aunt or uncle). But grown-ups will enjoy this inspired literary adaptation—and kids, meanwhile, will learn a little bit about colors while enjoying some quality time spent buried in a Christmas classic with their lit-loving parents.
