Since her husband passed away, Gertie Johnson has had too much time on her hands, so she starts meddling in Sheriff Blaze Johnson’s cases. He also happens to be her son. When Chester Lampi takes a bullet to the head while waiting for a deer in his hunting blind, Gertie can’t resist investigating, even though Sheriff Blaze has already ruled the death an accident—or quite possibly suicide.
Gertie uncovers mineral rights on a piece of land that Chester refused to sell. Someone had been in town making an offer—but would they have killed to get their hands on the property when Chester said no? Gertie starts asking questions, attracting the wrong sort of attention, and her life becomes endangered as well.
Before Gertie knows it, her man-hungry friend, Cora Mae, and fellow word-of-the-day lover, Kitty, all want a piece of the action. They prove to be more of a hindrance than a help, but Gertie is in no position to be choosy about her partners—especially when her son is threatening to have her committed if she doesn’t back off. One thing is certain: the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is about to get a whole lot more interesting with Gertie Johnson on the job.
