This light-hearted audio adventure finds Stephanie taking a break from the bounty hunting business to try to track down her batty old Grandma Mazur, who’s gone missing. Stephanie and her ever-present sidekick, Lula, follow the clues (and a renovated motor home) to Atlantic City, where her grandma is painting the town green with a bag of lucky money that she found on the street.
Of course, Stephanie and Lula aren’t the only ones looking for Grandma. She’s also being tracked by a little man in green pants who’s convinced that he’s a leprechaun. And that little man is being tracked by both a crazy mobster and a handsome mystery man named Diesel—which means that action, laughs, and exploding cars are sure to follow.
If you’re looking for a light and entertaining audiobook to pass the time during your daily commute, you can’t go wrong with a Stephanie Plum novel. Evanovich is known for filling her stories with eccentric characters—and this short, amusing standalone is no different. In addition to the quirky series regulars—from outspoken and oversized former prostitute Lula to Stephanie’s spunky grandma—you’ll meet plenty of other crazy characters, too. Some of those side characters even give the book just a hint of supernatural possibilities. And Lorelei King’s animated narration brings them all to life in a way that will sometimes have you laughing out loud as you picture each one.
The story, meanwhile, isn’t as wildly, outrageously hilarious as some other Stephanie Plum adventures, but it’s still fast-paced and funny—and full of the usual edge-of-your-seat action.
Of course, Plum Lucky isn’t technically a standalone novel, since it’s connected to the other novels in the Between-the-Numbers series. But it doesn’t have the same cliffhangers or ongoing story arcs that you’ll find in the main series, so you won’t have a problem picking up just one. And since it’s such a short and easy-going novel, it makes a great choice for in-car entertainment—because you’ll be able to enjoy the quirky characters and their silly story without getting so caught up in the details that you’ll miss your exit.
