COLUMBIA, SC Columbia man Rupert Lang was at the end of his rope. He had nowhere to turn. After his firewood business went under, thanks to the growing popularity of those fake remote-controlled fireplaces, Lang was forced to file for bankruptcy. His debts had grown to an unmanageable size. His bank account was empty. The penny jar in his bedroom was empty. He was even forced to buy generic macaroni and cheese instead of the cheesiest.
Things were looking mighty grim for Rupert Lang.
But then it came. One Tuesday afternoon, Lang left his house long enough to shuffle hopelessly to the mailbox, expecting even more threatening letters from creditors, yet hoping for that letter from the Publishers Clearing House that could possibly make him a millionaire.
He found neither threatening letter nor sweepstakes entry form that day. What he found was just the blessing that he needed to survive. There, on the outside of the spotless white envelope, were the words, “You’re Pre-Approved!”
At his mailbox that day, Lang discovered that he was pre-approved for the Utah Ladies’ Club / Bank of Beulah Platinum card—with no annual fee and a credit limit of up to $100,000!
You can imagine Lang’s excitement as he filled out the short, simple application and mailed it in. He called his friends and family to tell them that his worries were over; he had found a way to get out of debt. They even threw him a small celebration, complete with Moon Pies and crab cakes—and real Kraft Macaroni and Cheese.
Then, just weeks later, Lang received his card. He was the happiest man alive. And with the handy balance-transferring checks included with his new Utah Ladies’ Club / Bank of Beulah Platinum VISA card, Lang was able to pay off everyone to whom he owed money. All $85,000 of his previous debt—and at a special introductory interest rate of just 38%.

As if her writing and editing responsibilities for N&W.com weren’t enough to keep her out of trouble, Kristin also hosts a number of weekly radio shows: Reel Discovery, Shelf Discovery, and On the Marquee.
