When we’re young, it seems as though we have all the time in the world to learn and grow and experience life. But in Then Came You, an awkward young man discovers how fleeting life can be when he experiences it through the eyes of a terminally ill teen.
Then Came You stars Asa Butterfield as Calvin, a troubled young man who left college and returned home to live with his parents and work with his dad and brother as a baggage handler. He’s convinced that he’s dying of cancer, yet his doctor can’t find a single concern—so he sends Calvin to a support group for cancer patients to get a fresh perspective. That’s where he meets Skye (Maisie Williams), a boisterous teenager who enlists him to help her with the list of outrageous things that she wants to do before she dies.
The message of Then Came You is nothing new. We’ve seen the story of a character who learns to live while spending time with someone who’s dying before—yet that doesn’t really make this one any less meaningful. Sometimes wildly funny, sometimes heartbreaking, it takes audiences on an emotional rollercoaster ride.
Butterfield’s Calvin is a lovable character—and a relatable one, too. After all, it’s easy to get so caught up in our fears and our routines that we stop moving forward. And he’s certainly done that. He’s shut himself off from other people—headphones over his ears, observing the busy lives around him, obsessing about each ache and pain. And it isn’t until he meets Skye that he’s forced out of his quiet, lonely bubble.
Williams’s Skye is daring and outspoken and ready for anything—because she’s got nothing to lose. At times, she goes a little too far over the top, and she crosses the line to cringe-worthy. But there’s just something fun and playful about her colorful wigs and her more colorful adventures—and the way she forces Calvin out of his shell.
Together, these two make for a likably unlikely pair. They care for each other unconditionally. They help each other through their challenges. And they tell a sweet story of being a friend and living life to the fullest.
Then Came You is a sweet and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny film. Be sure to pack the tissues for this one, though—because it’ll be a challenge to make it through the entire thing without shedding some tears.
