We all have dreams and goals—some big, some not so big. But each one comes with challenges and obstacles along the way. And in Wild Rose, a young woman decides that she’ll do whatever it takes to turn her huge dream into a reality.
Wild Rose tells the story of Rose-Lynn (Jessie Buckley), a young woman from Glasgow who leaves jail with a dream of making it big in Nashville—but she’s got a whole lot standing in her way. Not only does she not have the money—nor the connections—to get her there, but she’s also trying to balance her dreams with the challenges of being a mom to her two kids. When her supportive new boss, Susannah (Sophie Okonedo), decides to connect her with the right people, though, it seems that Rose-Lynn’s dream could actually come true.
Most parents—and especially moms—will understand Rose-Lynn’s struggle. She may be talented and driven and determined to make it in the country music industry, but she’s also a mom—and that means that she’s expected to put her children above herself, no matter what.
After a year behind bars, Rose-Lynn struggles to readjust to life as a parent. She rents an apartment and gets a job, but she ends up breaking promises and disappointing both her kids and her disapproving mother (Julie Walters), who’s always quick to point out her daughter’s mistakes and selfishness. But no matter how much she loves her children—no matter how much she wants to do what’s right for them—Rose-Lynn still has this nagging dream that just won’t let go. And, like many moms, she struggles to figure out how to have it all.
Rose-Lynn’s story is a challenging and inspiring one—but it’s also an entertaining one—with lines that will hit home for many viewers. And it’s all enhanced by moving performances that, while you might struggle to understand some of the strong accents, will make you happy to do a little extra work to figure out what the characters are saying.
If you’ve ever had a dream that seemed too big to the people around you—if you’ve ever struggled to find the balance between your goals and your responsibilities—you’ll be moved (and maybe even motivated) by the story of this country girl in Scotland. It’s a memorable film with a talented star—and it’s well worth seeking out.
