Many of us grew up learning about life, friendship, and the world around us from Fred Rogers, the lovable host of public television’s Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Mister Rogers always encouraged kindness and imagination in his viewers. And in the book Life’s Journeys According to Mister Rogers, his thoughts and observations live on.
This short little book is a collection of quotes by the beloved children’s television host. The collection is divided into three sections: Who You Are Right Now, Loving and Being Loved, and Guided Drift—all topics that seem so fitting for Rogers and his usual themes. Each section is filled with observations of the world around him, of things he learned from the people he met throughout his life, and even stories about his own life and experiences. Some pieces are longer, some are just one short sentence, but they all offer advice on how to enjoy life and be a good neighbor.
Mister Rogers may not be with us anymore, but, thanks to the internet—and books like this one—those of us who grew up watching Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood can still enjoy his timeless wisdom and share it with our children, too. And, as his widow, Joanne, points out in her insightful foreword, these words of encouragement and positivity, of acceptance and love, are every bit as meaningful and valuable today as they were during the show’s three-decade run.
Everything in this collection of life lessons is a quote from Mister Rogers, and it’s easy to hear each piece in his calm, soothing voice, a sweet smile on his face as he teaches about finding happiness and bringing happiness to others.
Just like the lessons on his popular TV show for kids, the lessons and observations here may seem simple—and even simplistic—at first, but if you give them some time to sink in, you’ll find that they’re often surprisingly profound. You might want to read it from cover to cover (and it wouldn’t take long at all), or you can open to a random page and find some valuable words of wisdom for your day. And each page will remind you of the lessons you learned as a child from this wise and kindhearted TV host.
For those of us who grew up watching Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Life’s Journeys According to Mister Rogers will bring back great memories. This collection is full of thoughtful observations and advice for fans of all ages.
Listen to the review on Shelf Discovery:
Kristin Dreyer Kramer has been writing in some form or another (usually when she was supposed to be doing something else) since the ripe old age of ten—when she, her cousin, and their two Cabbage Patch Dolls formed the Poo Authors’ Club. After a short career in advertising, Kristin got sick of always saying nice things about stuff that didn’t deserve it—so now she spends her days criticizing things, and she’s much happier for it.
Since creating NightsAndWeekends.com in February of 2002, Kristin has spent her life surrounded by piles and piles of books and movies—so many that her office has become a kind of entertainment obstacle course.
As if her writing and editing responsibilities for N&W.com weren’t enough to keep her out of trouble, Kristin also hosts a number of weekly radio shows: Reel Discovery, Shelf Discovery, and On the Marquee. She’s also a proud member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (CriticsChoice.com), the Central Ohio Film Critics Association (COFCA.org), the Online Film Critics Society (OFCS.org), and the Women Film Critics Circle (WFCC.Wordpress.com).
Kristin lives in Columbus, Ohio, with her husband, Paul, and their daughter, Anna. She welcomes questions, comments, and fan mail at kdk@nightsandweekends.com.
