This year marks the 80th anniversary of the beloved classic film .nightsandweekends.com/articles/09/NW0900501.php>The Wizard of Oz. And as you’re celebrating the anniversary by rewatching the movie, that also makes it the perfect time to hit the road with the audio edition of L. Frank Baum’s original 1900-published novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
The classic story follows a little girl named Dorothy as her little home in Kansas is swept up by a cyclone and carried off to a strange land. When the house finally lands, Dorothy finds that she’s killed the wicked witch who’s been ruling over the Munchkins. They see her as a hero—as someone with great and important powers—but Dorothy just wants to return home to her family. The Munchkins direct her to the great wizard, who lives in the fabulous Emerald City. And as she goes in search of the one person who’s powerful enough to get her home, she meets new friends and goes on magical adventures.
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz packs a whole lot of adventures into one novel. If it’s been a while since you’ve watched the movie or read the book, you may have forgotten some of the obstacles that Dorothy and her friends face along the way. It’s more than just the march down the Yellow Brick Road to find the great Wizard of Oz. And along the way to get what they truly desire, they find themselves battling wolves and crows and gigantic spiders and, yes, flying monkeys, too.
Beyond just action and adventure, though, it’s also a sweet story of friendship. It’s about a band of lovable characters who want nothing more than a heart…a brain…some courage. And it quickly becomes clear that these characters already possess the traits they feel that they lack—that they don’t need a wizard to fix what isn’t actually broken.
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is an action-packed adventure—with the travelers facing one challenge after another. But it’s also a charming tale about finding the greatness that lies within each and every one of us. It’s a fun-filled story for young readers, but it’s also a meaningful one for grownups.
If you haven’t read this beloved classic lately—or if you’ve only ever watched the movie—be sure to pick up a copy of this audiobook for your next family road trip. It’s the perfect pick for your family’s next big adventure.
Listen to the review on Shelf Discovery:
Kristin Dreyer Kramer has been writing in some form or another (usually when she was supposed to be doing something else) since the ripe old age of ten—when she, her cousin, and their two Cabbage Patch Dolls formed the Poo Authors’ Club. After a short career in advertising, Kristin got sick of always saying nice things about stuff that didn’t deserve it—so now she spends her days criticizing things, and she’s much happier for it.
Since creating NightsAndWeekends.com in February of 2002, Kristin has spent her life surrounded by piles and piles of books and movies—so many that her office has become a kind of entertainment obstacle course.
As if her writing and editing responsibilities for N&W.com weren’t enough to keep her out of trouble, Kristin also hosts a number of weekly radio shows: Reel Discovery, Shelf Discovery, and On the Marquee. She’s also a proud member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (CriticsChoice.com), the Central Ohio Film Critics Association (COFCA.org), the Online Film Critics Society (OFCS.org), and the Women Film Critics Circle (WFCC.Wordpress.com).
Kristin lives in Columbus, Ohio, with her husband, Paul, and their daughter, Anna. She welcomes questions, comments, and fan mail at kdk@nightsandweekends.com.
