For elementary school kids, Valentine’s Day is usually a time for cute cards and treats and fun school parties. It’s a fun holiday that kids look forward to. But in the audio edition of Oh, Valentine, We’ve Lost Our Minds! by author Dan Gutman, one class gets totally out of control as the holiday of loooooove approaches.
The story heats things up for one elementary school classroom when the class gets a new foreign exchange student just before Valentine’s Day. His name is Pierre, and he’s from France. He’s handsome and polite and incredibly romantic—and he’s got that amazing accent. Immediately, all of the girls in A.J.’s class fall head-over-heels in love with him. But while Pierre is romancing all of the girls and taking his “special Valentine,” Andrea, out for ice cream, A.J. and his friends decide to throw a wrench in Pierre’s Valentine’s plans—and that’s when things get really crazy.
This Weird School Special mixes laughter and young love for an outrageous audiobook that both boys and girls can enjoy—because while the girls in the class get caught up in the hearts and flowers and romance of Valentine’s Day (and learn a lesson or two in the process), the boys get to fight back by wreaking havoc on the day.
The characters are lovably quirky—from the lovesick girls competing for Pierre’s attention to the annoyed boys who think that the whole thing is just plain ridiculous. And while Pierre may be little more than a pint-sized French stereotype—all candies and cheeses and chivalrous acts—his arrival definitely sets the stage for an entertaining story.
Once Pierre arrives in class and makes all of the little girls’ hearts go pitter-patter, the boys (led by A.J.) plot their revenge. Admittedly, these troublemaking boys can be rather rude in a little-boy kind of way. But the outcome is so outrageously silly that readers of all ages will find themselves giggling out loud at what happens next.
Whether you’re looking for the kind of book that your young reader will actually be eager to read or an audiobook that will pass the time on your next road trip, pick up Oh, Valentine, We’ve Lost Our Minds! These cute characters and their kooky holiday make for a great read.
