Holidays can be fun for the whole family—but they’re even more exciting when seen through the eyes of the younger members of the family. And in the audio edition of author Dan Gutman’s Bunny Double, We’re in Trouble, the Weird School kids offer their take on the egg hunts and sweet treats of Easter.
The story begins as A. J. is awakened one Sunday morning and forced to put on fancy clothes and a tie. Though he’s not thrilled about getting dressed up, his sister reminds him that Easter means candy—so he reluctantly climbs into the car and joins his family and friends at the mayor’s mansion for an Easter celebration. While the grown-ups drink coffee, the kids try to figure out who’s hiding the Peeps. But when the mayor announces that there’s a golden egg containing $1000 hidden in the yard, the party turns crazy.
The Weird School stories are entertaining little comedies for kids, with a cast full of quirky characters in silly situations. Gutman writes with imagination and an obvious love of wordplay, and that makes them the kind of stories that parents and kids can enjoy together—the kind that will make readers of all ages giggle.
Once again, A. J. and his friends get caught up in all kinds of wacky adventures as they compete with ruthless first-graders to roll eggs and hunt for candy. And as the parents retreat to their own area, the kids end up exploring the mansion and uncovering all kinds of Easter surprises.
This time around, though, the story is more random and meandering than some of the other books in the series. The characters’ personalities aren’t quite as strong here, and the conflicts are weak, too. Mostly, it’s just a series of snippets of adventures throughout the day as the kids wait to be rewarded with their beloved Peeps. Of course, it’s still silly holiday fun, but the story isn’t quite as cohesive as other Weird School books.
If you’re planning a holiday road trip to visit family, Bunny Double, We’re in Trouble will make a fun way to pass the time on the road. The silly story will keep the whole family giggling, and it’s not so deep and involved that you’ll get totally lost if you don’t end up paying attention to every last word.
