Sometimes life just gets to be too much to handle, and it’s important to take time out from the daily grind—whether that means a long walk or a weekend getaway. But in the audio edition of The Switch by Beth O’Leary, one woman finds that she needs much more than just a quick breath of fresh air.
The story makes a huge change with Leena Cotton, a high-powered Londoner whose meltdown during a business presentation gets her sent away on a two-month sabbatical. Devastated by the decision, she travels to the countryside to visit her grandmother, Eileen. Recently single and nearing 80, Eileen could use a change of her own. So the two decide to make a swap. And while Leena settles into her grandmother’s countryside cottage and takes over her responsibilities, Eileen sets out for London to find new passion for life—and maybe new love, too.
Of course, as these two world-weary women settle into their completely new and unfamiliar surroundings, things are bound to go horribly, comically wrong—and their bumbling adjustments make for an entertaining read. While Leena expects life in the countryside to be lazy and dull, she soon finds that her grandmother has her hands in just about everything in town. And, in London, as Eileen tries to navigate the busy streets and figure out dating apps, she discovers that it’s not easy being an older person in the Big City.
During their eight-week experiment, these two women find strength and passions that they never knew they had. And as you follow their journeys, you’ll fall in love with these characters. You’ll feel their grief and their pain. You’ll laugh with them as they learn from their mistakes. You’ll cheer them on as they gradually become the women they were meant to be—instead of just the women everyone else expected them to be. And when it comes to an end, you’ll find yourself wishing that you could stay in their world just a little longer—that you could spend more time learning from both of these strong and inspiring women.
It may be packaged as a light work of chick lit, but The Switch is just as inspiring as it is entertaining. It’s a charming story that shows how you’re never too old to start living the life you’re meant to live and to make a difference in the lives of others.
