Each winter, fans of cozy romances spend hours and hours and hours cuddled up on the couch watching Hallmark Christmas movies. For some, it’s a beloved holiday tradition. But for those who find themselves traveling for the holidays—or even stuck in traffic while trying to do some holiday shopping—there’s the audio version of Christmas in Evergreen, the novelization of a lovable Hallmark Christmas movie by author Nancy Naigle.

The story travels to the small town of Evergreen, Vermont, where the town veterinarian, Allie Shaw, is preparing for a huge change: she’s closing up shop and moving to Washington, D.C., to start a new job and see how things work out with her long-distance boyfriend, Spencer. As she prepares to spend Christmas with Spencer before the move, she meets Ryan Bellamy, a widowed doctor who stops for lunch in Evergreen with his young daughter, Zoe, on their way to spend Christmas on a sunny cruise. But when a snowstorm shuts down the airport, and Allie helps Ryan and Zoe find a room in Evergreen, they both start reconsidering their holiday plans.

It may be a novel instead of a movie, but everything about Christmas in Evergreen is exactly as you’d expect from a Hallmark Christmas movie. Allie is a sweet, lovable character who loves her small town, its residents, and their annual Christmas celebration. Somehow, though, she’s paired up with a guy who’s more interested in big city parties than Allie’s small-town festivities. Ryan, on the other hand, is a ruggedly handsome single dad who’s just trying to do what’s best for his adorable little girl. And as they get to know each other, things just start to make more sense for both of them—which complicates everyone’s Christmas plans.

From there, there are Christmas wishes to be made, Christmas trees to be decorated, and a whole lot of relationship issues to figure out as Allie, Ryan, and Zoe end up stuck in Evergreen as the holiday approaches. Of course, there are absolutely no surprises along the way, and the story ends exactly as you’d expect. It’s warm and cozy, with a little bit of romance and a whole lot of Christmas wonder and magic—without any demanding plotlines.

Since not everyone can spend the entire holiday season curled up in front the the TV, this novelization of Christmas in Evergreen is a charming alternative. Whether you’re traveling to visit family, running holiday errands, or locking yourself away to wrap presents, it makes for some sweet and completely brainless holiday entertainment.
