During yet another holiday season, families are planning their festivities. They put up decorations and bake cookies and shop for gifts and plan their holiday meals. But in the audio edition of Murder at an Irish Christmas, the sixth Irish Village Mystery by Carlene O’Connor, one family’s Christmas celebrations are interrupted by a murder investigation.
The story travels to West Cork, Ireland, to spend the holidays with Siobhán O’Sullivan and her family. They’ll be meeting Siobhán’s brother, James, and his fiancée, Elise, for some holiday festivities and a Christmas concert conducted by Elise’s famous grandfather, Enda Elliot. But when the family arrives in Kilbane, they’re part of the group that discovers Enda’s body crushed under a harp at the concert hall. And though Siobhán was looking forward to spending a quiet holiday without any investigations, she suddenly finds herself in the middle of another murder case.
Of course, as soon as the body is discovered, the suspicions set in. Everyone in town is quick to assume that the neighbor is responsible—mostly because he’s an outsider. But nearly everyone seems to be hiding some kind of secret. Siobhán immediately begins asking questions and searching for clues—even though she’s not officially on the case and it means investigating the people who will soon be family. But Siobhán is a no-nonsense kind of person, and she refuses to let a killer go free—even if it means angering her future sister-in-law’s family. And there are so many possibilities that the story will keep readers guessing.
Despite all of the murder and mayhem and finger-pointing, though, there’s just something comforting about this story set in a small Irish village. It’s the epitome of a cozy mystery: the family together for the holidays, all staying in rustic little cottage in the snowy Irish countryside. And as the O’Sullivans play games together, shop for their gifts, and decorate a tree for their holiday home away from home, you’re sure to fall in love with this lovable brood—and if it’s your first Irish Village Mystery, you might just find yourself searching for the others.
If you like your holiday reads to feature a little bit of murder and intrigue, Murder at an Irish Christmas is a good choice. It’s light and cozy—but with a story that will keep you engaged.
