Whether you’re preparing for a long road trip or a quick drive to the next town, Nightmares and Dreamscapes, Volume 1 will make the time fly. It features eight unabridged articles from King’s collection of short stories – for over 9 1/2 hours of listening.
The collection begins with the author’s preface and then jumps into a handful of stories based on dreams, nightmares, and those whispered rumors that kids tell at sleepovers.
The stories are as varied as their readers. Whoopi Goldberg reads “Suffer the Little Children,” a story about a teacher who discovers something unusual about her students. Rob Lowe reads “Dolan’s Cadillac,” the story of a man’s quest for revenge – at any cost. And Yeardley Smith (whose Lisa Simpson voice is a bit distracting) reads “Rainy Season,” which follows a young couple who pick the wrong day to show up in a small town. The stories aren’t all just King’s standard horror and suspense, however. “Head Down,” read by King himself, is an essay about Little League.
Nightmares and Dreamscapes, Volume 1 gives listeners a chance to indulge in King’s world in bit-sized pieces. And though the readers’ voices are sometimes a bit distracting or lacking in diction, the stories will capture your attention. And since they’re all short stories, if you don’t like one, you can always move on to the next one.
Kristin Dreyer Kramer has been writing in some form or another (usually when she was supposed to be doing something else) since the ripe old age of ten—when she, her cousin, and their two Cabbage Patch Dolls formed the Poo Authors’ Club. After a short career in advertising, Kristin got sick of always saying nice things about stuff that didn’t deserve it—so now she spends her days criticizing things, and she’s much happier for it.
Since creating NightsAndWeekends.com in February of 2002, Kristin has spent her life surrounded by piles and piles of books and movies—so many that her office has become a kind of entertainment obstacle course.
As if her writing and editing responsibilities for N&W.com weren’t enough to keep her out of trouble, Kristin also hosts a number of weekly radio shows: Reel Discovery, Shelf Discovery, and On the Marquee. She’s also a proud member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (CriticsChoice.com), the Central Ohio Film Critics Association (COFCA.org), the Online Film Critics Society (OFCS.org), and the Women Film Critics Circle (WFCC.Wordpress.com).
Kristin lives in Columbus, Ohio, with her husband, Paul, and their daughter, Anna. She welcomes questions, comments, and fan mail at kdk@nightsandweekends.com.
