Have you ever been told “if it’s too loud, you’re too old”? Apocalyptica takes music many have deemed too loud and turned it into a classical masterpiece. Four cellists, whose names I could never pronounce, have taken eight hard pounding songs from the band Metallica and have created a fast-pace classical sound.
The first track, “Enter Sandman,” carries the recognizable guitar riffs and places it onto cellos made as far back as 1738. Track 2, “Master of Puppets,” immediately proves how classical music and heavy metal are closer in musicianship than some would dare admit. The breath and depth carried out on the cellos not only makes you want to head-bang, but it also exposes the emotion and essence Metallica has.
This music may not work for a calm dinner party, since someone will feel the urge to toss rolls at Grandma and spit gravy all over Mom’s clean tablecloth, but it does work when reading a good book, doing some work around the house, and scrubbing the dishes. Pick up the CD – it’s worth every penny.
