100% Colombian is a unique little mix of everything. A little jazz, a little punk, a little hip-hop, a little old country. And, somewhere in there are the sounds of Rage Against the Machine, Everlast, Morphine (which is often so overwhelming that it can’t possibly be unintentional), a little George Jones, and maybe a bit of the Grease soundtrack.
I love the dreamlike, smooth, jazzy numbers that mix spoken word, a funky, mellow beat, and a dash of trumpet. Songs like “We Are All Very Worried About You” remind me of a cool bar in the East Village in New York City – laid-back, and smooth (and a little bit retro). There are a couple of songs, however, that – even though they (surprisingly) almost seem to work – just don’t fit. “10th Street” sounds like old country mixed with hard-core punk. It definitely stands out on the album – and it leaves you praying for the next song (which, thankfully, goes back to normal).
Overall, 100% Colombian is a great album. It could do without the country influence on a couple of the songs, but the rest of the album – the smooth, jazzy style – is worth wading through the rest. It’s the perfect album for cocktail hour – just add a comfy couch and a few martinis.
