Right from the start of the opening credits, one word came to mind — Clueless. Remember the 1995 movie with Alicia Silverstone playing a rich California girl? Well, Legally Blonde is a bit like Clueless — only more grown-up.
Reese Witherspoon stars as Elle Woods — a popular sorority president who wants nothing more than to marry her boyfriend, Warner Huntington III (Matthew Davis). Unfortunately, Warner, an East-Coast Senate hopeful, has aspirations of marrying someone with a name like “Kennedy” or “Vanderbilt” — not a perky, blonde California girl. Determined to win him back — and to be taken seriously — Elle somehow manages to get herself into Harvard Law School. Unfortunately, she’s run into a little problem — Vivian Kensington (Selma Blair), Warner’s fiancée.
Despite cheeseball lines and the occasional bad overacting, I got a good laugh out of this movie. No one asks you to take it seriously — or to debate its finer cinematic points. All they ask is for you to pick the movie up at Blockbuster (or Amazon, of course), pop some popcorn, turn on the TV, turn off your brain, and have a laugh or two. In fact, they want you to laugh at how overdone and ridiculous it is. It’s that way on purpose. (At least I sure hope so.)
Legally Blonde is a great movie for Girls’ Night Out — but don’t drag the guys along. They just won’t get it — and they’ll think less of you when it’s over.
