This film, starring Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Robin Williams, provides a brilliant examination into the world of Will Hunting (Damon), a janitor employed at a prestigious university. This janitor, however, has a secret: he is a brilliant mathematician with a questionable past. The arrogant Professor Lambeau, portrayed by Stellan Skarsgård, accidentally discovers Will’s genius and strives to turn him into his prodigy. However, this task is not easily accomplished, due to Will’s volatile behavior and lack of interest.
Through the guidance of Sean Maguire (Williams), a psychiatrist with a past of his own, Will is able to tackle his demons and appreciate his natural talents. Along the way, Will falls in love with the beautiful Skylar (played by Minnie Driver) and must choose between using his mathematical gifts and maintaining friendships with a working-class group of buddies from the other side of town.
This film won several Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Robin Williams and Best Original Screenplay by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck — and the honors are well deserved. The intellectualism and emotional bonds amongst friends and enemies make this a film to remember.
