Each winter when I was a kid, I looked forward to all the Christmas specials — Charlie Brown and his sad little tree, Rudolph and the elf who wanted to be a dentist, Frosty’s magic hat, and the Grinch with his puny heart. The Christmas specials were old and poorly animated, but they were Christmas traditions. They were the same stories every year.
When The Grinch came to the big screen, I had mixed feelings. On one hand, I was excited that one of my old favorites was headed for newer, greater things. But on the other hand, it just wasn’t the same. The cartoon version was a half hour — including commercials for all the latest toys. What would they do to turn the story into a feature film? As hesitant as I was, however, I was happy with the final result.
Jim Carrey plays the Grinch, a fuzzy green menace who lives in the mountain overlooking Whoville, a town full of festive little Whos who love nothing more than Christmas. The Grinch hates the happy Whos and their holiday cheer, so he decides to ruin the day — just for fun. There’s one Who, however, in all of Whoville, who believes that the Grinch might not be as bad as people think. Cindy Lou Who — a little Who in search of the real spirit of Christmas — digs into the Grinch’s past and tries to bring him back to the happiness of Whoville.
The Grinch puts a new spin on an old favorite — and it’s sure to become a Christmas classic, just like the old cartoon special. Besides Jim Carrey’s tendency to occasionally be a bit too… Jim Carrey, the movie is great. So if you’re ever sitting around, wishing it were Christmas (or getting ready for the holidays), go out and pick up The Grinch. And get yourself a plate of milk and cookies. It’ll make you feel all warm and Christmassy inside.
