Every once in a while, I take a little extra time to look through my CD collection and pick out something that I haven’t heard in a while. I did that this morning, and I ended up selecting Natural Ingredients — a CD from my college days.
I first heard Luscious Jackson on the soundtrack to the movie, Clueless. Their song, “Here,” was one of my favorites from the soundtrack, so I decided to give the band’s full-length debut album a shot.
Luscious Jackson is an all-girl band, but Natural Ingredients isn’t a mainstream, poppy, girl group kind of album. “Here” may be a great dance tune, but much of the album is very different — though not necessarily in a bad way. Instead of an album full of booty-shakin’ club tunes, it varies from funky dance music to mellow grooves. The band definitely has a unique sound, often mixing unusual beats with a psychadelic Eastern sound — and a DJ-mixed feel thrown in just for fun. And maybe a little reggae here and there, too. Since Luscious Jackson is a rockin’ chick band, their songs, such as “Strongman” and “Energy Sucker” are mostly of the girls-kick-ass variety.
Needless to say, Natural Ingredients isn’t for everyone. It’s different — so it takes a little getting used to. But it’s the perfect album for those times when you just feel like listening to lounge-y, groovy chick music.
