I’ve never claimed to have normal taste in music. When I was in college, those who lived in my dorm could hear anything coming from my room, depending on the day (and my mood). It could be U2 or Sting or The Cars or Pearl Jam or The Clash or Cyprus Hill or Bob Marley or George Winston. So what is it today? Currently, in the three-disc player on my desk, you’ll find Eminem, Pink, and the old standby — the Doobie Brothers.
Best of the Doobies is a CD that has rarely left my CD player for years. Because it calms me. When I was suffering through a pathetic job, complete with a few idiotic coworkers, I put on my headphones and played this disc over and over again — and it kept something that resembled a smile on my face. And now that I work from home, it keeps me company. It’s a collection of peppy (yes, I just used the word, “peppy”), easy-going, danceable tunes that I couldn’t live without.
From the moment I hear the first few notes of “China Grove,” I swear my heart rate slows. This really is a compilation of the best Doobie Brothers songs — from “Long Train Runnin’” to “Listen to the Music.” It’s a CD that I could listen to over and over for months (actually, I have) without going crazy. In fact, I’m quite sure that this CD is the one thing keeping me out of a mental institution.
RPM editor’s note: Kristin has gone crazy. The men in white coats are currently paying her a visit. Remember, a padded room isn’t always a bad thing.
Kristin Dreyer Kramer has been writing in some form or another (usually when she was supposed to be doing something else) since the ripe old age of ten—when she, her cousin, and their two Cabbage Patch Dolls formed the Poo Authors’ Club. After a short career in advertising, Kristin got sick of always saying nice things about stuff that didn’t deserve it—so now she spends her days criticizing things, and she’s much happier for it.
Since creating NightsAndWeekends.com in February of 2002, Kristin has spent her life surrounded by piles and piles of books and movies—so many that her office has become a kind of entertainment obstacle course.
As if her writing and editing responsibilities for N&W.com weren’t enough to keep her out of trouble, Kristin also hosts a number of weekly radio shows: Reel Discovery, Shelf Discovery, and On the Marquee. She’s also a proud member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (CriticsChoice.com), the Central Ohio Film Critics Association (COFCA.org), the Online Film Critics Society (OFCS.org), and the Women Film Critics Circle (WFCC.Wordpress.com).
Kristin lives in Columbus, Ohio, with her husband, Paul, and their daughter, Anna. She welcomes questions, comments, and fan mail at kdk@nightsandweekends.com.
