SHAR-R-R-O-O-N!!!
Ah, what a familiar sound that has become to the legion of fans who watch the Osbournes’ reality show on MTV. Now the complete first season is available to own on DVD.
Many people may not be interested — because you can just catch the re-runs on MTV. The channel certainly provides enough opportunities, but it will not (or cannot) air the uncensored language, the deleted material, special segments, games and personal interviews that the DVD has to offer.
Two of the best things that the DVD offers are the choice of censored or uncensored language and the Ozzy translator. Now, most viewers can guess what’s being said when the beep covers bad words, but there are times when even the best of linguists scratch their head to understand Ozzy.
The Ozzy translator is not your typical sub-titling, and it actually helps to show Ozzy’s sense of humor. Every now and then, Ozzy says something that even leaves the translator guessing what the # * ^ ! Ozzy just mumbled.
The deleted material is stock footage. At times, the viewer will wish that some material was left in the episode — and there’s some footage that creates an appreciation for the editor’s choice to cut it. There’s also a funny blooper reel included, and it shows more of what didn’t make it into the episodes.
There’s also a game included on the disc that will appeal to the juvenile in all of us. “Name that Dookie” will make you laugh the same way that a fart joke does, and it’s even funnier after watching Episode Two, when the dogs spend most of the segment pooping throughout the house. As Ozzy says, “Where else can you see an international rock star picking up dog crap?”
The personal interviews are pretty long, and they hit on a wide spectrum of material. Sharon, Ozzy, Jack, Kelly, Melinda the nanny and even Michael the security guard all provide insights to the family Osbourne — and they offer feedback about taping the first season and the aftermath of it all.
Whether you’re a long-time fan of Ozzy Osbourne and his music, or you just decided to see the episodes because of Ozzy and the kids’ Super Bowl commercial, the Osbournes First Season is definitely a jewel to include in your DVD treasure chest.
