Target stores rock. It is a simple statement with no true logical basis of any kind. But when you search for up-and-coming artists, Target not only delivers, but they give you a great price, too. My latest find is a California band, The Ataris. They have no symbolic gesture toward the great 80s game consul, but they do have that strong Southern California punk/rock sound.
This disc has a driving edge that truly makes this album more rock than punk. The first song, “So Long, Astoria,” has a strong rock influence. The track really kicks off this CD on a high note. On the song, “The Hero Dies in this One,” the band’s harmony shines brightly — not something you ever hear on a punk album. Don’t get me wrong, I love punk. It’s just nice to hear something rock out.
My one complaint is the song “The Saddest Song.” It does not live up to the name. The lyrics were sappy and not well thought out. I felt my toe tapping to the heavy rhythm of the song. I’m sure, over time, they will improve on the lyrical content. Aside from that, the CD is really strong. Especially with the Don Henley remake of “The Boys of Summer.” It rocks — but not without holding onto the original essence of the song.
So Long Astoria is a good CD. Definitely worth the trip to your local Target store and the plopping down of $8.99 (plus tax in some states).
