The first track opens with the melodic musings of a tight horn section comprised of seasoned veterans of the Boston music scene — bands such as Willie Alexander’s Persistence of Memory Orchestra and the Revolutionary Snake Ensemble. Fronted by Chandler Travis of the Incredible Casuals, the Chandler Travis Philharmonic has a sound that is rich, multi-dimensional, and upbeat. Llama Rhymes features fifteen tracks of engaging originals.
The sound has been described as alternative dixieland, but it truly does not conform to any one genre. There are genius instrument combinations like guitar, accordion, mandolin and mandicello stylings. The lyrics are brilliant — sometimes abstract and always smile-inducing. Take the title track: “Nothing other rhymes with mother like llama rhymes with mama.” I find it difficult to listen to this disc without dancing. And even if you’re not one to dance, you’ll have a hard time keeping your feet from tapping. No matter how bleak my mood, this music always makes me smile.
