Okay, so we’ve all done
it. While waiting in line at the grocery store behind some woman with a cart full of
canned goods and right in front of a woman with a cart full of screaming children, we’ve
all snuck a peek at the tabloid headings. Maybe we’ve even gone so far as to pick up a
copy and flip through. And if you’re anything like me, you’ve often looked at those
headings and wondered, “Who comes up with this stuff?”
Well, Peter Fenton
was one of those guys who came up with that stuff. As a reporter for the National
Enquirer for 15 years, Peter saw all kinds of great stories—some true, and others
not-so-true. And now he’s put together a book/game called Truth or Tabloid? It’s
a collection of headlines that are totally unbelievable and ridiculous—but some of them
are actually true. Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to determine which
headlines are true and which are the result of an overactive
imagination.
The front of each page features five headlines. You (and
your friends, if you happen to have a few handy) try to guess which ones are truth and
which are tabloid, and then you turn the page to find the answers—and a little more
information about the headline and the story that goes with it.
Truth
or Tabloid? is an interesting book to pick up from time to time—especially if you
happen to have the aforementioned friends nearby to play along. But don’t try to sit
down and read it from cover to cover like a regular book—it’s guaranteed to mess with
your head.
Kristin Dreyer Kramer has been writing in some form or another (usually when she was supposed to be doing something else) since the ripe old age of ten—when she, her cousin, and their two Cabbage Patch Dolls formed the Poo Authors’ Club. After a short career in advertising, Kristin got sick of always saying nice things about stuff that didn’t deserve it—so now she spends her days criticizing things, and she’s much happier for it.
Since creating NightsAndWeekends.com in February of 2002, Kristin has spent her life surrounded by piles and piles of books and movies—so many that her office has become a kind of entertainment obstacle course.
As if her writing and editing responsibilities for N&W.com weren’t enough to keep her out of trouble, Kristin also hosts a number of weekly radio shows: Reel Discovery, Shelf Discovery, and On the Marquee. She’s also a proud member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (CriticsChoice.com), the Central Ohio Film Critics Association (COFCA.org), the Online Film Critics Society (OFCS.org), and the Women Film Critics Circle (WFCC.Wordpress.com).
