As of late I’ve been lacking the funds necessary to buy the
materials to keep the reviews coming strong. One night I thought to myself, “What would
I need to do to find a CD to review?” Well, the answer was in front of me. Interviewing
is a great way to get the information. I know just the guy too. His name is My Selph.
My Selph just so happens to live in the same apartment as me. In fact, we share a room.
The interview is as follows:
Cory Dams: Thank you for
coming.
My Selph: Thanks for having me.
CD: What have you
been listening to lately?
MS: Well, I’ve been going through this phase
that comes about every two years where I need to listen to this heavy metal group from
Maryland. They go by the moniker of Clutch. They’ve been around since 1991, and they’re
about as tight as you can get.
CD: Tell me, Mr. Selph, what album by
Clutch have you been head-banging to as of late?
MS: Please, just call me
My. I’ve been currently rocking out to The Elephant Riders. This disc took a
bit, but it is my favorite one by them. It contains great songs such as “Elephant
Riders,” “Muchas Veces,” and “Wishbone.”
CD: I’m intrigued. Please tell
me more about these songs.
MS: First, the lyrical stylings of lead
singer, Neil Fallon, are so creative it’s unbelievable. They aren’t the traditional,
sappy, girlfriend-left, now-I’m-sad. These lyrics are sometimes confusing, hilarious,
interesting, or tell stories. The title track, “Elephant Riders,” has Civil War
undertones. It references riding the B&O Railroad and the Battle of Antietam. “Muchas
Veces” is my favorite song on the whole CD. (Hey look, CD, your initials!) Anyway, it
begins with this really tight beat. Fallon then describes how he goes searching for his
lost loves. All these lost loves are famous, and he finds they’ve gone off with others.
To wrap it up, “Wishbone” takes the listener through different American holidays. In the
end, each holiday ends up with breaking the wishbone.
CD: Fascinating.
How about musically? What does Clutch sound like?
MS: Really? There is
no band out there to compare them to. They have awesome guitar solos throughout their
songs. The drumbeats are tight and fit together nicely with the bass line. These are
guys that, if you saw them, you wouldn’t expect them to play this music. But let me tell
you, they can wail. And they’re even better in concert! YEAH!
CD: Well,
thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to talk to me. I hope we can do
this again sometime. Maybe your brother, Your Selph, would meet with me next
time.
