Read Time:1 Minute, 13 Second
Stephen King got me hooked on the horror
genre. And after reading several of his books, I decided that it was time to branch
out—so I ventured out and picked up my first Dean Koontz novel.
In
Phantoms, Dr. Jenny Paige returns to her home in the small mountain town of
Snowfield, California with her younger sister, Lisa, only to find the town deserted.
There’s no one out in the streets. In fact, the place is completely silent. As Jenny
and Lisa explore the town, they find the bodies of several of Jenny’s friends and
neighbors—all of them died suddenly, with no sign of struggle. Others have simply
vanished—their radios still playing, the table set for dinner. But how could so many
people just vanish on a normal Sunday afternoon? Could it be a strange disease that
killed Jenny’s neighbors, or is it something else—something that’s still out there,
watching her every move?
Phantoms is a horrifying novel that will
grab you from the beginning and refuse to let go until it’s over. The story is
fascinating, and it’s full of the kind of heart-pounding, suspenseful, edge-of-your-seat
action that will keep you reading “just one more page” to see what happens next. And it
never slows down, either—the action just doesn’t stop.
This may have
been my first Koontz novel, but it definitely won’t be my last.
Kristin Dreyer Kramer has been writing in some form or another (usually when she was supposed to be doing something else) since the ripe old age of ten—when she, her cousin, and their two Cabbage Patch Dolls formed the Poo Authors’ Club. After a short career in advertising, Kristin got sick of always saying nice things about stuff that didn’t deserve it—so now she spends her days criticizing things, and she’s much happier for it.
Since creating NightsAndWeekends.com in February of 2002, Kristin has spent her life surrounded by piles and piles of books and movies—so many that her office has become a kind of entertainment obstacle course.
As if her writing and editing responsibilities for N&W.com weren’t enough to keep her out of trouble, Kristin also hosts a number of weekly radio shows: Reel Discovery, Shelf Discovery, and On the Marquee. She’s also a proud member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (CriticsChoice.com), the Central Ohio Film Critics Association (COFCA.org), the Online Film Critics Society (OFCS.org), and the Women Film Critics Circle (WFCC.Wordpress.com).
Kristin lives in Columbus, Ohio, with her husband, Paul, and their daughter, Anna. She welcomes questions, comments, and fan mail at kdk@nightsandweekends.com.
