This high-flying, adrenaline-filled
film from the ‘80s is back with a special edition. For those who missed it before,
Top Gun is about a cocky pilot known as Maverick (played by Tom Cruise) earning a
shot to attend the Navy’s Top Gun Academy, where the best pilots in the world are
trained. They’re the aerial equivalent of Navy SEALS or Special Forces units. While the
testosterone is high, men and women can enjoy the film together—because in between
amazing aerial shots and simulated dogfights, they slipped in a love story and some
emotional growth.
I loved this movie, but I was disappointed with the
initial DVD release years ago, because it was sparse for extra features. This time, I’m
thrilled by the amount of extra material. Special features include a six-part
documentary on the making of Top Gun, re-mastered sound and video, unseen footage;
music videos from the original soundtrack, old storyboards, featurettes, and
more.
