Players: 2-5
Playing Time: Hours
If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably played a lot of Risk in
your day. Back in my college days, my friends and I could play into
the wee hours of the morning to see who the best junior Napoleon was.
The original Risk has captivated players for years, and now comes a
new twist on the old game of world conquest—Risk: Godstorm.
The twist is pretty simple: instead of choosing random colors to
represent your armies, you now chose an ancient civilization with which to
conquer the world (and the Underworld). Among the choices
available are the Egyptians, the Celts, and the Norse. But as you
might intuit from the name Godstorm, mortal warriors will not be the
only tools at your disposal. In this game, the gods themselves will
play a large role in who wins and who loses. Deciding when and how to
deploy such deities as Odin, Hecate, Set, and others is a key part of
gameplay. Each god gives the player a different boost in the game,
whether giving you extra armies, or adding to your dice-tossed score.
The classic Risk map is a little different this time around as well.
Instead of playing over the entire planet, now your activities are
confined to the known ancient world. So the action centers around the
Mediterranean Sea, with Europe, the Near East, Russia, and North
Africa being the main areas of play. But that’s not all. You can
send your armies to conquer the Underworld, and even to Atlantis.
Beware, though, for at some point in the game Atlantis may sink into
the sea, drowning any and all armies that may be there.
Risk: Godstorm is a fantastic game for those who love the original
Risk, and who are looking for a new version to add some spice to the
classic world conquest formula. As with the original game, you need
at least two would-be conquerors and several hours to devote to a
really good game. If your inner Julius Caesar is just bursting to get
out, with all the gods at your command, check out Risk: Godstorm today.
