My brother-in-law (who’s younger and, without a doubt, way cooler than I am) shares my love of music (though he goes a step further, and he actually plays it, while I stick to listening, since I regrettably gave up on clarinet lessons long ago). In the five years that we’ve known each other, we’ve regularly broadened each other’s musical horizons. We’ve borrowed each other’s CDs. I’ve shared my love of bands like Soul Coughing. And he’s introduced me to all the up-and-coming bands that Toronto has to offer. On a recent visit, he pulled out Redblack, the new EP by Toronto band Grand:pm—and I was hooked right from the first beat.
Grand:pm takes the sound of modern bands like The Killers and Weezer and throws in a little retro twist, with the occasional synthesizer, drum machine beat, and plenty of other quirky sounds to make Redblack something different and fun. From the title anti-love song to the mellow, melancholy “Do-over” to the catchy “Cat People” (which, at times, sounds a little bit like an 80s sitcom themesong…in a good way), the album is full of infectious beats and unexpected sounds that work so very well. You’ll find plenty of touches here and there that hint to influences by artists from the last few decades—but the end product is totally unique and well worth checking out.

Kristin Dreyer Kramer has been writing in some form or another (usually when she was supposed to be doing something else) since the ripe old age of ten—when she, her cousin, and their two Cabbage Patch Dolls formed the Poo Authors’ Club. After a short career in advertising, Kristin got sick of always saying nice things about stuff that didn’t deserve it—so now she spends her days criticizing things, and she’s much happier for it.
Since creating NightsAndWeekends.com in February of 2002, Kristin has spent her life surrounded by piles and piles of books and movies—so many that her office has become a kind of entertainment obstacle course.
As if her writing and editing responsibilities for N&W.com weren’t enough to keep her out of trouble, Kristin also hosts a number of weekly radio shows: Reel Discovery, Shelf Discovery, and On the Marquee. She’s also a proud member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (CriticsChoice.com), the Central Ohio Film Critics Association (COFCA.org), the Online Film Critics Society (OFCS.org), and the Women Film Critics Circle (WFCC.Wordpress.com).
