This is a delightful disc packed with catchy tunes, charming lyrics and some damn fine musicianship. These songs are upbeat, lighthearted and marvelously infectious.
The thing that strikes me most about this album is that, aside from guest vocals on three of the tracks, this is all just one guy. Lerner does everything here, and he does it extremely well. This man plays a mean guitar, some kickin’ trumpet and his keyboard work is amazing.
The vocals are pure and clear and the harmonies are sweet. The mix is clean, the beats are captivating and every single tune is as good as the last.
At times, the style is a bit similar to that of They Might Be Giants. Other times I find it akin to an upbeat version of Simon and Garfunkle with a sense of humor.
This is one of the best discs I’ve heard this year. But you don’t have to take my word for it; you can download a “Song for Free.” I guarantee it’s absolutely impossible to listen to without at least cracking a smile.
This is Todd Lerner’s debut album and I’m certain we can look forward to a lot more great work from him.
