It only takes a few notes of “Ghosts & Vampires,” the first track on Miami artist Shauna Burns’s debut album, Every Thought, to be completely drawn in. Listeners will immediately be reminded of Tori Amos (especially albums like Little Earthquakes, my personal favorite)—and you might even be reminded, as I was, of an old favorite George Winston album.
Burns’s musical talent is undeniable right from the start. It’s not hard to believe that she’s been playing the piano since she was a small child—and composing since she was just 15. Her music combines folk and Celtic influences with spectacular piano arrangements and clear and melodic vocals. Her voice shows great diversity throughout the album—at times breathy and wistful, at others strong and emotive. Her melodies are mesmerizing and hauntingly memorable—and, after just one listen, you’ll find them playing themselves over and over in your head. The sound itself overshadows the songs’ lyrics, but that doesn’t really matter. I’m quite sure Burns could be singing nursery rhymes, and the music would still be beautiful and moving.
From the first light, playful notes of “Ghosts & Vampires” through the piano-driven epic, “Nonsense,” to the last haunting notes of “Maryland,” Every Thought is strong and powerful—yet it still manages to be calming and gentle at the same time. It’s an excellent choice for winding down after a long day.
Keep an eye on this talented new artist. I’m sure this isn’t the last we’ll hear from her.
