This disc is a delightfully ingenious exercise in atrocity. It contains a healthy dose of both screams and gunfire. The language is guttural, the lyrics are bloody and seething with such rage and misogyny it’s laughable. At times, some of them even had me cringing. This is no small feat. It’s curious how much I love it.
The rap stylings here are extraordinary. There is a nice strong rhythm section with a clever blend of weapon sounds incorporated into the percussion. And that, my friends, is creativity at it’s finest.
“Xxplosive” is catchy and almost sweet. “Ed-Ucation” is particularly brutal and the ultimate guilty pleasure. “Forgot About Dre,” featuring Eminem and “The Next Episode,” featuring Snoop Dogg, are both great tracks for dancing. “Pause 4 Porno” is enchantingly filthy. There are titles here that I can’t even say, but I can promise, it’s all good.
2001 may not always be pretty, but it certainly is a powerful and very satisfying listen if you’re a fan of hip-hop/R&B.
