Every once in a while, I get so hooked on an album that I can’t seem to take it out of my car’s CD player—no matter how hard I try. I’ll listen to nothing but this one album for days. And when I’m not listening, I’ll be singing the songs in my head. And, think of me what you will, but right now, that album is Tenacious D’s The Pick of Destiny.
The Pick of Destiny is the soundtrack to the D’s big-screen epic adventure-comedy-rock-opera by the same name (see my review of the movie—it’ll help you understand the album a little better, too). Like any good rock opera soundtrack, the pretty much tells the film’s entire story—so if you haven’t seen the movie yet, be warned that there are plenty of spoilers. But if you’ve already seen the movie, listening to the soundtrack is like enjoying the movie over and over again. And, if you ask me, that’s a good thing.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with Tenacious D’s music, well, it’s a difficult thing to describe. Take Jack Black’s wild, over-the-top sense of humor. Give it crude, corny, adolescent lyrics, and make them rhyme—badly (i.e., “She who is snarky/Is full of malarkey…And he who is groovy/Must be in my movie.”). Now put it to music. Heavy metal music. Or, occasionally, a power ballad. Or maybe some classical guitar music (as in “Classico,” one of my favorite songs on the album). And there you have it—the music of Tenacious D. Musically, it leans toward bad junior high garage band, but that’s exactly what it’s supposed to be—and it’s so corny that you can’t help but love it (as long as you have a somewhat twisted sense of humor).
While it didn’t take me long at all to get sick of the D’s 2001 self-titled release, I just can’t stop listening to The Pick of Destiny. It’s an album that always manages to make me smile, no matter what kind of a mood I’m in. Whether I’m tired or stressed out or suffering from road rage, I can crank up the CD player, and, in no time, I’m laughing and singing along. Sure, I’m in danger of getting pulled over for speeding while listening to “Car Chase City,” but, if you ask me, that’s a small price to pay.
