If you’re a child of the ‘70s, this one will blow you away in a tidal wave of nostalgic bliss that will carry you back to an endless summer of carefree youth—way back…before taxes, car insurance, and high blood pressure. Remember back when you were invincible; when the sky was bright and everything was all right?
What I found most fascinating about listening to this two-disc set is how it had me pondering, with great wonder, that part of the human brain that holds on to memorable lyrics with such remarkable accuracy. Oh yes, this is crazy old, mad good, and startlingly familiar fare that will have you singing along to lyrics that you forgot you even knew.
The first disc kicks off with “Chasing the Rainbow,” a sweet jam with some delightful guitar stylings. “Daisy Jane” is soothing without being sleepy. “I Need You” sways like a hammock in the breeze. The second disc (my favorite of the two) opens with the upbeat, breezy “Ventura Highway.” This one will always be classic. “Sister Golden Hair” is stunning, melodic, and magical. And I could go on forever about the charmingly romantic “Muskrat Love.” I’m talking about when Muskrat Suzy and Muskrat Sam were nibblin’ on bacon and chewing on cheese. Man, those truly were the days.
This is lighthearted, danceable fare with strong musicianship, sweet vocals, and catchy melodies. If you want to stroll down memory lane back to when summer vacation lasted three months and after a long day at the beach you would fall asleep on a screen porch to the lullabies of June bugs, run to your CD player, pop in America’s Here and Now, and let the good times roll!
