Stevie Nicks is a wise old soul with the voice of an angel. And Crystal Visions highlights some of her finest work created throughout the years and features many talented guests including Sheryl Crowe, Deep Dish, John Henley and Tom Petty.
It opens with the buoyant, danceable “Seventeen.” I can’t help but be carried back by this tune to the days of my youthful optimism. “If Anyone Falls in Love” is upbeat, with insightful lyrics and gorgeous vocal harmonies. This one conjures images of driving down the highway on a hot summer day with the top down and the wind in your hair. “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” is a gritty, energetic duet with Tom Petty. The obvious musical chemistry here makes the vocals on this track absolutely sublime. “Dreams” with Deep Dish is another one that manages to be thoughtful without bringing you down. A wonderful live version of “Rhiannon” is included. This one opens softly, then picks up the pace and seriously kicks. The classic ballad “Landslide,” recorded live with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, is breathtakingly gorgeous in a thought-provoking and melancholy sort of way. Nicks covers Led Zeppelin’s classic, “Rock And Roll” beautifully with passion and soul. But my favorite track on this disc is the steamy ballad, “Leather and Lace” featuring Don Henley.
A bonus DVD is included. Those who know me will tell you that I’m not a huge fan of fashion. Nonetheless, Stevie Nicks has some truly amazing threads. That aside, the film includes “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” with Tom Petty and a sweet version of “Sorcerer” featuring Sheryl Crowe. Also included is footage of the Bella Donna recording sessions and plenty of insightful commentary by Stevie Nicks.
Crystal Visions would make the icing in the cake of any serious fan’s collection or a perfect essential for any lover of classic rock and roll.
