From the moment I heard the first note, there was something instantly familiar about Monheit’s clear, sweet vocals, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. The style seems like an (admittedly) implausible combination of Barbara Streisand and Astrud Gilberto. Imagine early Streisand, but with a Latino flair. This is soft and sultry, old-school romantic fare with gorgeous vocals (the range is incredible) and a very talented band backing.
It opens with “If You Went Away.” There is plenty of lovely violin work on this one and an exquisite saxophone solo by Ari Ambrose. The title track is steamy, but things really heat up with the exotic “Rio de Maio,” a heavenly duet featuring Ivan Lins. This song is so beautiful you have to close your eyes when listening. “Só Tinha de Ser Com Vocě” is upbeat and sexy, featuring more of Ari’s stellar sax skills. A delightfully seductive rendition of “Moon River” is included here as well. The combination of styles is unique, but Monheit absolutely shines with the bossa nova tracks–so much that, at times, I found myself wishing that it was all just one big bossa nova blitz. Nonetheless, it’s certain to have something to please almost anyone.
This is perfect dance music, but only with a partner. Otherwise, it’s just right for chilling out with good friends after a long day.
