Dear Christine,
I had the strangest dream. It started with a phone call that my husband received. His friend said he wanted 10 cigarettes. I couldn’t understand why my husband didn’t explain to his friend that he quit smoking four and a half years ago. Instead, we went to the bookstore to give this guy his cigarettes. We ended up looking at books, but there were crazy people all around us, so I just wanted to get out of there. We left, and my husband started running. I couldn’t keep up with him, and I couldn’t understand why he was running so fast because he knew I didn’t know where I was going.
The small town we were in then changed to a wooded area with snow on the ground. We were running to a cottage where we were visiting my dad and stepmother. My husband was still running far ahead of me, and I lost sight of him. I thought I recognized some things in the woods, so I was trying to find my way. When I finally caught up with him, he had found a container of methane gas, and he poured it out everywhere. He went a little crazy and ran off again. I found him back at the cottage. He was in a room with the door shut. (I didn’t actually see him, but I think someone told me he was in there.) There were people outside the room, trying to inhale the methane gas that was coming from the room.
Confused
Dear Confused,
Telephone calls in dreams usually represent some issue surrounding communication, and the fact that your husband doesn’t communicate to his friend that he quit smoking years ago seems to support this. Browsing through a bookstore suggests a quest for knowledge, yet you’re discouraged from pursuing this because you’re uncomfortable in your surroundings.
Running from someone (or something) suggests that something is being avoided. Sometimes other people in our dreams (especially those we’re close to) represent aspects of ourselves. This could mean that there’s something you’re trying to avoid, perhaps because of some uncertainty. I say this because you mention that you weren’t sure where you were going.
Traveling from a small town to a snowy wooded area takes you to a cool, quiet place where you can reflect. You’re going to visit family, and you recognize where you are—this indicates that you have a strong support system.
There is definitely a compelling theme here. Both cigarettes and methane gas relate to the element air, which represents our thought processes. And since both cigarettes and methane produce a level of toxicity, you may be mulling over some uncomfortable or cloudy issues. The crazy people that drive you from the bookstore also point toward matters of the mind or thoughts that are troubling. The friend who wanted the cigarettes and the people trying to inhale the methane could represent either folks that you know—or even aspects of yourself—that you’re trying to understand better.
Treat yourself to a peaceful and relaxing day, preferably outdoors, in the fresh air and sunshine. A day at the beach or a stroll in the park will give you some room to breathe and a fresh outlook on the situation.
Thanks so much for sharing.
Best,
Christine
